You can use canned, frozen, or fresh asparagus. I keep a can of asparagus for a quick soup or sauce but use fresh when available.

Start with small amount of seasonings and add to your particular taste.
Add all ingredients to your blender and pulse until smooth. Transfer to a saucepan and heat through.
This not only makes a wonderful and satisfying soup, but it also makes a great sauce for chicken. Put the sauce on the plate first, and place grilled or baked chicken breast on top.
